The Play

Before the first cardBoston is on at this table. A side that takes all 13 tricks wins the game on the spot, whatever the score. South holds seven spades with the A♠ and K♠, plus the A♣ and K♦. North-South bid 9, so a sweep means 4 bags, but if they take every trick the game is over and the bags don't matter.

  1. 1North leads A♥ · East 10♥ · South 2♥ · West 4♥North wins

  2. 2North leads A♦ · East 6♦ · South 3♦ · West 7♦North wins

  3. 3North leads 3♥ · East 9♥ · South 2♠ · West 7♥South wins

After card 11South is out of hearts and trumps East's 9♥ with its lowest spade.

  4. 4South leads A♠ · West 9♠ · North 5♠ · East 8♠South wins

  5. 5South leads K♠ · West 8♦ · North 6♠ · East J♠South wins

After card 20South draws trumps with the A♠ and K♠, and West shows out on the second round. Only one spade is still out now, the Q♠.

  6. 6South leads A♣ · West 6♣ · North 4♣ · East 2♣South wins

After card 21South doesn't lead another spade. The Q♠ is still out and beats every spade South has left, so a spade lead could hand an opponent a trick and end the sweep. South cashes the A♣.

  7. 7South leads K♦ · West 9♦ · North 2♦ · East Q♦South wins

After card 25The A♦ went on the second trick, so the K♦ is now the highest diamond. It wins too.

  8. 8South leads 3♣ · West 8♣ · North Q♠ · East 7♣North wins

After card 32North trumps West's 8♣ with the Q♠, the one spade South couldn't account for. It was in partner's hand. Every spade left is South's now.

  9. 9North leads J♦ · East 5♣ · South 4♦ · West 10♦North wins

After card 36North's J♦ holds. The A♦, K♦ and Q♦ are all played, and West's 10♦ is lower. That's 9 tricks, the bid.

  10. 10North leads 5♥ · East K♥ · South 3♠ · West 8♥South wins

After card 39East's K♥ would take this trick, so South trumps it. A bag, but only a sweep matters now.

  11. 11South leads 4♠ · West 9♣ · North 6♥ · East 10♣South wins

After card 41South holds the last three spades in the deck. Leading them wins the last three tricks, because nobody else can follow or trump.

  12. 12South leads 7♠ · West J♥ · North 5♦ · East K♣South wins

  13. 13South leads 10♠ · West J♣ · North Q♥ · East Q♣South wins

After card 52North-South take all 13. With Boston on, that wins the game right here.
